About the event
Beginning with Parry I was Glad, famous for its inclusion in British Coronation services since 1902, other towering church anthems in this programme are Bairstow Blessed City, Heavenly Salem, whose text is taken from a Latin hymn for the dedication of a church, and music is a blend of plainsong, Brahmsian, Elizabethan, and Jacobean influence. Elgar The Spirit of the Lord is the incredible opening movement from his oratorio, The Apostles, heard tonight with an organ reduction of the orchestral accompaniment; on Saturday we will repeat this work in a new arrangement accompanied by String Quintet and Piano, and there is a chance to join in with that performance following our Choral Workshop on Friday evening. Ending the concert is Finzi Lo, the Full Final Sacrifice, written in 1946 with text that celebrates the Eucharist, with a beautiful, melismatic final Amen in E Major.
